CBC BUYS LOCAL SHORT FILM

Will Air on Zed TV

Vancouver, Feb 2005 - Still photographer and experimental filmmaker Mark Hemmings has sealed a deal with CBC Television for the non-exclusive rights to Geist.

The deal comes after a purchasing executive for CBC Vancouver saw the film on Zed - an internet companion site to the network television program of the same name.

Geist airs on Zed TV this Friday, February 18 at 11:25 PM. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation will retain the film in its archives for future broadcasts.

Zed TV is just the latest development for Geist, which is having a stellar year as a film product. In addition to this new development, its film festival premiere at Saint John One, and its position of prominence on Zed, it has been selected for official presentation at the Mako International Film Festival in Hungary. Hemmings will fly to Hungary in April and personally introduce the film to the European audience. Of that anticipated experience, Hemmings acknowledges the strong interest that Europeans tend to have in short films compared to North Americans, and looks forward to his first-ever international premiere of one of his own film projects.

“With the success of local events such as Continental Drift and Saint John One, there is a growing acceptance and excitement concerning non-Hollywood style cinema."

Mark Hemmings, Feb 2005

Geist was created through photo animation, a meticulous and demanding process involving the capture of thousands of individual, high resolution digital photos, which are then edited on film editing software. The final result is a style reminiscent of early Hollywood films; a slight jerking motion that reminds the viewer of silent films where filmmakers had to overcome the challenges of hand-cranked cameras and the varying speeds of the camera operator’s arm.
